Beat the Bots:
The Ultimate ATS Resume Guide
75% of resumes are rejected by AI before a human ever sees them. Learn how to optimize your resume, integrate the right keywords, and pass the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) scan.
What is an ATS?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software used by employers to collect, sort, scan, and rank the job applications they receive.
The ATS parses the content of your resume into categories (Work Experience, Education, Skills) and then scores it based on how well it matches the job description. If your formatting is confusing or your keywords are missing, you get filtered out.
1. Parsing
The bot reads your file. If you use graphics or columns, it might read gibberish.
2. Ranking
It counts keyword frequency. "Project Manager" vs "Managed Projects" matters.

The Safe List
Use Standard Headings: Stick to "Work Experience", "Education", and "Skills". Don't get creative with "My Journey" or "Professional Timeline".
Single Column Layout: This is the safest bet. It ensures the parser reads your history in the correct chronological order.
Web-Safe Fonts: Arial, Helvetica, Calibri, Georgia, or Roboto. Size 10-12pt for body, 14-16pt for headers.
Exact Keyword Matching: If the JD asks for "SEO", use "SEO". If it asks for "Search Engine Optimization", use that too.
The Danger Zone
Avoid Tables & Text Boxes: Many parsers cannot see text inside tables or floating text boxes. Your skills section might disappear completely.
No Images or Charts: Don't use skill bars (e.g., "70% Java"). The ATS can't read them and might assume you don't know the skill.
Don't Put Contact Info in Headers: Headers and footers are often ignored by parsers. Put your name and email in the main body text.
Avoid Creative File Names: Save your file as "Name_JobTitle_Resume.pdf". Avoid "MyResume_Final_v3.pdf".
