Definition

Form 16 is a certificate issued by an employer in India to their employees. It validates that TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) has been deducted from the employee's salary and deposited with the government. It is a mandatory document for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR).

The Two Parts

Part A

Contains details of the employer and employee (PAN, TAN, Address) and a summary of tax deducted and deposited quarterly. It is generated via the TRACES portal.

Part B

An annexure prepared by the employer containing a detailed breakup of salary, exemptions (HRA, 80C), and net tax payable.
